There are many horror stories about affiliate programs and networks. People have heard them over and over again, some are even wary of joining one. The growing number of those who have joined already and are succeeding, is proof enough that there are reliable and quality affiliate programs out there.

Which ones do you go for? Below are our top 10 tips to help you decide…

1. A program that you like and have interest in. One of the best ways of knowing if that is the kind of program you wish to promote is if you are interested in purchasing the product yourself. If that is the case, chances are, there are many others who are also interested in the same program and products.

2. Look for a program that is of high quality. For instance, look for one that is associated with many experts in that particular industry. This way, you are assured that of the standard of the program you will be joining into.

3. Does the company just offer e-books and training videos – or do they offer a physical product or software to go along with it. You can normally find out from their affiliate page or by asking on one of the discussion forums. We would recommend that you go with affiliate companies who offer viable products or software.

4. The program that is catering to a growing target market. This will ensure you that there will be more and continuous demands for your referrals. Make inquiries. There are forums and discussions you can participate in to get good and reliable feedback.

5. How much does your affiliate company pay in commission? This is an important question. We would recommend you don’t choose a company that pays out less than 30%, however many companies that choose to specify in electronic and software products can pay out up to 75%! You will want to make sure you are rewarded well for the time and effort you invest.

6. Be aware that some companies will make you hit a certain level of commission before they pay you out the money they owe you. Make sure you are happy with these levels before you commit yourself to the program.

7. It will make your life a lot easier (and more profitable) if you choose a company that has a good affiliates page or resources area. Not all companies have these but this sort of support will give you a much better chance of being profitable as they will often supply you things like banners, email templates, proven keywords etc.

8. Does your chosen affiliate company have a statistics page that allows you to check to see how many people are looking at your products. These figures will help you decide in the longer term whether you should keep promoting that particular product.

9. The program that is offering strong incentives for members to renew their membership each time. The affiliate programs that provide continuous help and upgrades for its products tend to retain their members. These things can assure the growth of your networks.

10. Finally, how do you find out the dud products out there, and the ones that are not selling well? Again the discussion forums are probably one of the best places to start. Avoid putting in your product name followed by the word ‘review’ into search engines as these reviews are normally just sales pages set up by affiliates for their products. The forums offer the best advice, if you can find some people there seeing success with the product – why can’t you as well?

It always makes sense to find out as much as you can about the company and the products you will be recommending.

Having this knowledge will give you some added belief in your market and may well help you with any challenges you may come across in the future.
