When you are a beginner to IM, the field can appear so intimidating, especially if you have no prior knowledge of the field. As you read through forums and articles, you’ll discover all types of lists about what you have to do to be the next big thing. Those lists likely all oppose one other. One will say that you have to be patient if you desire to be the next big thing. Another will say that you need to be extremely smart about business if you desire to be the next big thing. Still, another will say that creative thinking is what will get you ahead. And, of course, you can’t forget about all of the people saying that all you have to do is buy their software package if you wish to be the next big name in IM!
Know this: All of these things count (OK, maybe not the software program, but the other things). Business smarts, creativity and patience are all incredibly important to your IM success. Naturally, if you are not able to clearly communicate with customers and clients, none of the rest of it will really matter.
Good communication involves more than simply creating a convincing sales page. All you need for an effective sales page is the money to employ a seasoned copywriter. There is more to good communication than making a beautiful site that has an extensive FAQ. A skilled designer and writer can give you those. If you want to be an effective communicator, you must acquire interpersonal communication skills, not merely straightforward copywriting. So, how do you do that?
1. Answer each and every email you receive within 24 hours of it arriving in your inbox. We aren’t joking with you. You don’t have to write a a long reply for every email. All you have to do is compose a quick message that says something like “I got your e-mail and will be sending you a detailed response soon.” When you do this, include a reference to the sender’s e-mail. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the automated replies that other IMers employ.
2. Answer calls. Don’t be a call screener. If your telephone rings, answer it by the third ring. Do this even if you earnestly don’t wish to talk to the person making the call. You might be happy to find out that there is one exemption to this particular rule. You don’t need to be attached to the telephone 24/7. Instead, simply schedule clear “business” hours during which you are available take calls. Publish these hours on your site and in your voice mail message as well. And, lastly, always return your calls.
3. Check in with people to be sure that your messages and emails have really been delivered. This will indicate to the person that you truly care about communicating with them. You’ll endear yourself further with the people you work with and who buy from if you ask them if they have any questions and follow up to see to it that they understood the points you were trying to make.
