Home Based Jobs: What Is Out There and What’s Right for You

What are “working from home jobs”? The answer may seem obvious but it isn’t. On one hand we’re talking about methods of producing an income without the need to report to a usual job location. But that definition has to be developed if we can get an idea of what’s out there. Some might understand this term to mean a form of self-employment where one sets up one’s own business and bases it in your house. In other words, you’re self-employed and have your place of work and functions in the house. There are many careers, both full- and part-time that match this type. The important thing here is that you have no employer. You truly are your own boss.

Others might understand working from home jobs to include employment situations where you are an employee of an outside business but are allowed to do much or almost all of your work in your home office. Sometimes the term telecommuting may be applied to this set up. For many, this is very desirable since it couples the relative security that emanates from actually being on the payroll of an company but eliminates the need to report to some traditional job location. The time and financial savings in not needing to commute to an office and buy day-care is particularly attractive to mothers of young kids.

Which is right for you?

Realize that there are a wide array of possibilities within each of the two types of working from home jobs that we discussed above. And understand that jobs with virtually identical assignments and functions could fall under either classification.

Here’s a fast check-list that will help you clarify your thinking as to where you want to go with this.

- Do you demand freedom and are you willing to accept accountability for the success or failure of the business?

- Are you reluctant to leave the relative reliability of the monthly pay check?

- Do you want to focus on a well-defined set of jobs, or do you think you’re comfortable with the multitude of responsibilities that accompany self-employment?

- Do you want immediate income or are you able to afford to wait until a small business grows to the point of where it can pay you a reasonable salary?

- What other individual or family criteria should be factored into your final decision?

- What are your skill sets and your job experience?

- Are you able to discipline yourself to work independently without supervision?

- How do you feel about working alone without regular contact with people?
